Radio Announcer

1XX is one of the two remaining independently owned and operated radio companies left in New Zealand, operating 3 local stations in the Bay Of Plenty region of New Zealand.
Its genesis occurred in 1969 – inspired by what had been happening over the last 3 years through the efforts of the crew of Radio Hauraki in Auckland onboard the TIRI and TIRI II - which became New Zealand’s FIRST privately owned radio station after a 30 year monopoly on broadcasting by the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation.
The station has launched the careers of various New Zealand personalities, such as Brent Harman and Trevor Egerton, who have gone on to lead the country’s major television channels. Doug Harvey, Stephen Stuart, Leanne Malcolm and Ric Salizzo, to name just a few, have spent time at the Whakatane radio station before becoming television personalities.
Glenn Smith is one of the original private radio pioneers, first appearing on radio as a teen DJ over 40 years ago. He was involved with setting up student radio in New Zealand and has been part of 1XX in various roles including now as Managing Director since 1974. His other roles have been as an announcer, copywriter, promotions manager, sales manager. Under his leadership, 1XX has produced results such as one might expect from a major metropolitan radio company. 1XX is again New Zealand’s Provincial Station of the Year.
Glenn was a consultant in the early days for Energy FM which has folded into Radioworks. He is a member of the executive council of the Radio Broadcasters Association and is also a member of the International Broadcasters Idea Bank.
