Eco-Tourism Business Operator

Harvey James is director of the award winning Waimangu Volcanic Valley.

In 1886, Mt Tarawera in Rotorua erupted, destroying the surrounding area. The eruption opened the earth along a 17km rift, splitting Mt Tarawera in two, exploding Lake Rotomahana to 20 times its size, and forming the seven craters that today make up Waimangu Volcanic Valley. Within 15 years of the eruption, the hot springs of the Waimangu Geothermal System were established within the newly formed craters, making this the world’s newest geothermal eco-system.

Waimangu is a ‘must do’ eco-experience if you wish to experience unique ecology, botany and geothermal features during a visit to Rotorua. Today a range of easy walking, advanced hiking and boat cruise experiences can be enjoyed ranging in duration from 45 minutes to over 4 hours, to marvel at the spectacular scenery.

Harvey has lived in Rotorua since 1986. He has since then been the CEO of Waimangu Volcanic Valley Ltd. The various awards that the enterprise has achieved under his directorship include multiple New Zealand Tourism Awards for eco-tourism, and awards for Service to the Environment.

Harvey has an in depth knowledge of and experience in sustainable management, he has a clear vision for the future wellbeing of New Zealand tourism and for his community.
