Micro Brewer

Picture this… a long, long time ago (okay it was only the ‘90’s!), far, far away (in the deep south), a guy by the name of Paul Croucher had a dream. It started while as a student in Dunedin, took him around the world, and eventually back to his home town of Rotorua, where he began to make his dream a reality.

Experimenting at home, Paul began to produce quality beer on a very small scale. In 2004 he entered the Brew NZ brewing championship, and won the Non-Commercial Brewing Section with his Bohemian Pilsner. This gave Paul, and business partners Richard Croucher and Nigel Gregory, greater confidence to forge ahead with a commercial brewery. The Croucher Brewing Company was set up in 2004, premises hired in January 2005, and commenced brewing in the second half of that year.

Croucher Brewing Co has received various accolades from both the business and brewing community. The Croucher Pale Ale was awarded a Bronze medal in the hotly contested Pale Ale category at the 2006 Brew NZ awards (think of it as the Olympics for brewers!). To put it in perspective, only five Gold medals were awarded across all 15 categories. And many more-established breweries went home empty-handed! They also won the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce Emerging Business of the Year award in 2007.

Paul and Nigel are renowned for their passion and enthusiasm. It is for that reason, they were asked to speak at the BLAST motivational conference, alongside John Hart, the 42 Below team, Diane Foreman, and Michael Hill.

You can get up close and personal with these entrepreneurs, as they endeavour to challenge the Kiwi beer palate by doing everything they can to retain the natural flavours of the beer - there is no filtering or pasteurising. They are confident you will be able to taste the difference!
